The Kinkaid debate team recently had an eventful weekend of competition.  The team split up to compete at the season opener for national competition sponsored by Grapevine High School (Dallas) and to compete locally at Elkins High School.

At Grapevine High School, there were 103 schools in attendance representing 14 states and the District of Columbia.  The Grapevine Classic was a qualifying tournament for the Tournament of Champions, sponsored by the University of Kentucky.  Kinkaid took seven students and five returned with shiny trophies.  Kinkaid debate team’s success included:

•    In Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Nina Kalluri placed in the top 16 (octo-finals).  She lost her octo-final round to the eventual tournament champion from Westwood High School.

•    Senior Tyler Gamble and junior Emma Hanan placed in the top 32.  Tyler was also awarded the 13th overall speaker out of 111 competitors.

•    In policy debate, Kinkaid sent the sophomore team of Sabrina Bajwa and Sam Richey.  Sam and Sabrina placed in the top 16 out of 72 teams, losing a close 2-1 decision.

•    Sabrina Bajwa was also awarded the 16th overall speaker out of 144 individuals, a remarkable accomplishment for a sophomore.

•    Michael Sands, senior, and Jason Yang, sophomore, had the record to reach the elimination rounds in Lincoln-Douglas debate, but they failed to advance based upon speaker points.

Locally, Elkins HS hosted a strong local tournament.  There were 23 schools from throughout Houston in attendance.  Kinkaid had twelve students representing the debate team and Kinkaid found significant success.

•    In novice Congressional debate, first year Collin Lawrence was the winner!

•    In novice policy debate, first year Taqi Hasnain and sophomore Rahul Popat placed 2nd.

•    In LD debate, first year Sam Segal placed in the top 16 out of 85 entries.

•    In policy debate, the team of sophomore Zubair Mukhi & first year Anna Thomas had the record to reach the elimination rounds but they failed to advance based upon speaker points

Overall, the team had a successful weekend.  As always, many thanks to the Kinkaid parents and faculty for their support.  Special thanks go to co-coaches Jason Courville and Sydney Van berg for their time and effort.

A large, enthusiastic group of Kinkaid students recently took a trip to the Brookwood Community for adults with special needs to participate in a fun and meaningful service event. What normally would have been a regular, Saturday fitness session for the Brookwood citizens was turned into a fun and memorable day of fellowship and basketball. Faraz Varani '17 commented, "I really liked how we got to interact with the residents. It was really fun to play basketball with them, it was something everyone enjoyed." One of many Freshmen (who formed a large part of the Kinkaid group), Harrison Turner '18 remarked, "It gave me a very interesting perspective on a harder life with not as many blessings as students that go to Kinkaid have. I loved every part of the project and would do it again in a heartbeat." The project was a great success, and it's very likely that we will return soon for another fun Saturday of basketball at Brookwood! (The project was organized by Grant Martin, Community Service Council Project Leader, Class of '15)

Kinkaid Summer Service was a resounding success! The Community Service council offered 6 different projects where 103 students served over 432 hours. Below is a student review of one of our most successful partnerships with Salvation Army Family Residence, a home that offers sanctuary and life-changing programs to homeless single women and families.

For the first week of summer, a group of Kinkaid students shared their musical talent and passion with the children of the Salvation Army Family Residence in a three-day music camp.  Kids had a blast learning about different musical concepts ranging from rhythm to harmony, and even ukulele skills! The camp culminated in an hour-long music extravaganza in which the kids showed off all they learned to their family and friends. The Harbor Light Men’s Choir even joined us to give a magnificent performance. Overall everyone had a great time and learned a lot. Junior Rebecca Noel, who worked with the 4-6 year olds, said, “I think it’s really great that we got to teach the kids about music and produce an end product because a lot of them don’t get that kind of instruction at school.” We cannot wait to continue our partnership with Family Residence this school year!– Rebecca Roff ‘16
